Far Flung Realm is an interesting debut from Adamantis, a band that sounds like they should be from northern Europe, but hail from New England, right outside Boston, Massachusetts (not exactly a hotbed for power metal). On songs like "Unbound Souls" and "Puppeteer's Band" they execute some speedy metal like Hammerfall or Blind Guardian while "Journey's End" has more of a keyboard flair backing up the soaring vocals and had me thinking of Celesty. All this is great, a power metal fan's dream, but Adamantis do change things up a bit. "Second Sight" has a slightly slower tempo and bigger bottom end while the singer gets into a Messiah Marcolin groove giving the song a doomy, Candlemass feel. "The Siege of Arkona" slows things down even further and brings in some echo to give the guitars a bigger, far away sound and it is hard not to picture the band listening to early Manowar or newer bands like Visigoth in the past. Far Flung Realm is a mature album, belying the band's relatively short existence (having formed in 2016) with some variety you don't often find with power metal. It sounds like they spent their time honing the songs on Far Flung Realm and have done a really nice job. This is a band I will be watching very closely in the next few years. |
