Another album from Ice War right on the heel of 2020's Defender, Destroyer—I guess this pandemic is giving people lots of time to write music! The most noticeable thing on Sacred Land is the vocal style, which is much cleaner and louder than before, and that's also the album's Achille's heel as the vocals are way too loud and forward in the mix and often completely overshadow the music, so you need to put in some effort to really get into the actual music. Speaking of which, the music this time around sounds a lot more like old-school doom than on previous albums, which contained faster tracks than this. There are a few early Sabbath-ish riffs here and at times I was also reminded of Count Raven, which I guess is in the same big happy family anyway. If you manage to abstract the vocals and focus on the music, this is slow to mid-paced old-school raw heavy/doom with enough heaviness to pin you to the ground, and the nods to the old school are bound to make you crack a smile more often than not. It's too bad that the vocals are so forward on this, but if you put in some effort you'll be rewarded with some cool metal music. |
