Upholders of Evil is the debut EP from Indonesia's Spellforger and it is clear from the outset that these guys listened to a lot of early Slayer. The high-pitched screams sound exactly like a young Tom Araya, the squealing solos have Hanneman/King DNA all through them and the speed is taken right from Haunting the Chapel. It is all done so well, it would be wrong to say Spellforger are ripping Slayer off and more accurate to say they are honoring the legendary California band. Personally, I hope these guys either branch out and find their own sound on their next release or uncover a few hooks that Slayer overlooked and nail a standout Slayer-esque cut. Upholders of Evil is enjoyable, especially if you love early Slayer but, as you might expect, you've heard music like this before so pick it up with tempered expectations.
