Wheel is a German band that plays smooth, heavy doom with this album, Preserved in Time, their third outing. They borrow from Candlemass (don't most doom bands?) in the punctuation of the slow tempos with leaden bottom end that pounds out the beat. The vocals are more in line with more recent bands like While Heaven Wept and The 11th Hour in their graceful delivery and avoidance of overt histrionics. None of the songs ever struck me as a "hit" but I often found myself slowly banging my head throughout Preserved in Time, especially on the longer songs such as "Daedalus" and "Aeon of Darkness". Wheel isn't doing anything new, but they are doing doom very well, so give it a bunch of spins if that genre is on your radar. |
