Eclipser are among the many Black/Death acts that seem to have been sprouting all over the Canadian scene these past few years. They cite the likes of Deathspell Omega and Ulcerate as influences, which are all very clearly present in the harsh dissonance and sharp technicality present on Pages. I missed their debut, Pathos, from a couple of years ago, so I can't tell you how this compares, but I can say that it manages to contain a startling amount of density and aggression for being only 15 minutes long. That does mean the songs don't always have much room to breathe, often sounding closer to several good ideas played all at once rather than properly connecting to one another to make a song. The vocals are also kind of a weak spot, as they're a forceful bellow that certainly has power to it, but doesn't have much dynamic and often sticks out as the least developed part of the compositions. Complaints aside, this is never a release I get bored or irritated listening to, and with some more room for development and variety in the vocals, I can see this band hitting the lofty ambitions of the acts they take inspiration from. Fans of more technical Black/Death will want to give this band their attention. |
