Eleven years after its initial release, Stormspell is giving Laden Saint's self-titled debut (and to date, only) album a CD reissue. This Washington state-based band had an interesting sound on this album, with the bass taking a more prominent role that you typically hear outside of Iron Maiden. Some of the bass lines have a groovy feel which had me thinking of late '80s bands like Ignorance and Mordred, groups that worked some funk into their metal sound. Laden Saint don't go to the lengths those bands did but I could pick up hints here and there. Otherwise, they play traditional metal with some upbeat, almost power metal, songwriting and Maiden-esque harmony guitars. Combine that with some dark and twisted lyrics on songs like "Upon the Throne" and "Kill for the Thrill" and you aren't miles away from Walpyrgus. This album was only released independently back in 2010 and doesn't appear to have made much of an impact, but maybe this re-release will garner Laden Saint more notoriety and perhaps a follow-up album. |
