Spanish thrashers Wasted Militia have been waging a war on eardrums since 2014, releasing a 4-track EP and this full-length debut in that time. Musically, this is pretty simple Thrash that's not too far off from Max-era Sepultura and Silent Scream (the Californian one), with the slight Death Metal influences that would imply. You get plenty of pedal-to-the-metal songs on here like "Killing Machine" and the title track, and even some songs with slower sections like on the borderline Death/Thrash number "Under the Mark of the White Hand," and the band does a good job with all of it. I do find that the solos on this are a little lacking, the production a bit weak due to a flat drum sound, and the semi-growled vocals, while enjoyable overall, occasionally coming off as forced as they try a little too hard to be forceful and badass, all of which could probably be fixed if the songwriting were a bit more nuanced and distinct. As is, the band is perfectly good at what they do, but don't really stand out in a sea of Thrash revival acts. If they worked on their songwriting and got a better production, however, then I could see them making some killer shit in the future. A band to watch. |
