A name like Elvenscroll made me expect some symphonic Power Metal, but no, this is a Folk/Black band from Finland who have been around a long time, but are just now releasing this, their debut EP. The general approach is not too dissimilar from other folky bands like Forefather or Ensiferum, and this is a good mix of aggression and melody, with some genuine folk instrumentation mixed in to give it some real texture. I like the liveliness of the compositions, with memorable hooks and really good integration of the metal and the folk sounds. The vocals are a rather flat rasp that doesn't really add anything, but it doesn't hurt. Here and there they mix in some clean singing and choral effects, and that works a lot better. This will definitely get your head banging and makes this band one to watch for in the future. |
