Definitely a weird band name at first sight, but at least they didn't pick something already used by ten other bands. The name doesn't quite hint at raw black metal, though the album title kind of rectifies that, that's for sure. ;) Universal Hate Speech is raw, unpolished black metal that just blasts away, spewing hate and terror along the way. That goes for the music as well as the vocals, a raspy screech worthy of your worst nightmares. Speed is one thing, but there are also much slower, kind of atmospheric moments that are dark as hell, delivering the hate in a more haunting way. I like how the band achieved a good balance of speedy and slower songs, making for enough variety despite the short length (well, it is an EP) and never skipping a beat. There are influences mostly from the second wave here and some hints of the first wave and some bits that remind me of Carpathian Forest more "black 'n' roll-ish" moments. Overall, a good EP for those who like their black metal raw, dirty and hateful as fuck. |
