Raven has been around since the mid-70s with their discography beginning in the early '80s and coinciding with the nascent NWOBHM, though the Gallagher brothers insisted they played something called "athletic rock," a description borne out by their live shows. They've released a host of albums over the years, but if you want to know everything you need to know about them, 1983's All for One is the album you need to own. The album is stuffed to the gills with Raven awesomeness from "Take Control" and "Break the Chains" to the title track and on to "Mind Over Metal" and "Hung, Drawn and Quartered." The band plays with such enthusiastic abandon, All for One will leave you doubled over trying to catch your breath. With the production duo of Michael Wagener and Udo Dirkschneider, they even overcame the legendarily shitty Neat Records sound that plagued their first two albums and the songs on All for One sound warm and bright, like Raven is playing in your living room. John Gallagher screams and strangles his bass, Mark Gallagher coaxes otherworldly notes from his guitar and Rob "Wacko" Hunter abuses his drums on every song and it's all laid out for the listener to enjoy. This deluxe vinyl reissue, courtesy of High Roller Records, gathers some extras, like "The Ballad of Marshall Stack" and the cover of Steppenwolf's "Born to Be Wild" which features Dirkschneider singing along with John Gallagher and makes for a complete snapshot of Raven at the height of their power. All for One has been issued and reissued many times but this is as good a package as you're going to get of one of the best albums of the NWOBHM, so if you don't have it already or it is time to upgrade, snap up a copy. |
