Nothing better than discovering new Thrash acts decades after many proclaimed the genre was dead, especially when they're this good. L.A.-based act Seizure are like many other bands in that they're absolutely uninterested in reinventing the wheel and only care about conjuring up the magic of the '80s. They take very clear inspiration from other L.A. natives like Metallica and Exodus, especially in the punky, Hetfield/Mustaine-esque vocals of guitarist/vocalist Joey Love, none of which is particularly novel in this kind of old-school worship. The big difference is that on Born in the Dark, Seizure simply does it better than most, displaying more than enough sharp playing and energy to get past how simple and standard their formula really is. That simplicity does hurt them a bit in the songwriting, for outside of the surprisingly soothing midsection of album closer "Djinn's Curse", most of the songs lack variety and end up sounding a bit too similar to one another. The weak production hampers some of the musicianship on here as well, particularly with how the drums seriously needed to be more up front in the mix and sound feeble because they're not. Still, it's not every day you have a young band that successfully captures the vibe of the '80s Thrash scene, and with a bit of fine-tuning in the songwriting and production, I think these guys can do an even better job next time. A promising debut. |
