It can be hard to keep track of how many albums Graveland has put out, and that's because Rob Darken has made a habit of re-recording and re-releasing different versions of several albums with different production, instruments, lineups, and languages — The Fire of Awakening has been redone twice in the past 10 years—but a gross count makes this Graveland's 20th studio recording, which is damned good for a band this underground.

Graveland have been pretty inconsistent over the years, cranking out undeniable masterpieces like Memory and Destiny and Fire Chariot of Destruction, while also releasing unimpressive works like Dawn of Iron Blades and Spears of Heaven. I was not sure which we would get, but I am glad to find this album falling in the "good" column of this band's discography. Despite a rather obvious title, this is an album of epic, powerful Pagan Metal that is more than worthy of the Graveland name.

The production is very in line with Darken's more recent works, which means the guitar sound is a little weak, allowing the other instruments to blend in and create a more open, epic sound. I miss the old days of hammering, heavy riffs, but the riffs are good this time, and the music creates the lonely, proud atmosphere it is going for. If you are a fan of Graveland's later, more melodic and epic direction, then this is a fine example of it, and you should check it out.
