Fate's Hand is a relatively new entity (I think, information outside of Dying Victims' Bandcamp site is scarce) and this self-titled EP is their debut. The promo material talks about the band reaching back to the early day of heavy metal and I can certainly hear the NWOBHM in the vocals which are treated with lots of echo and the music, which is founded on riffs propelled by a driving rhythm section. It is solid with songs like "Fate's Hand" and "Fascination" the sort of metal that flourished in the early '80s and gave rise to the myriad of genres to come, but I don't hear anything that makes Fate's Hand all that distinctive. This could be a modern release by a group in the current crop of retro bands or some lost release from 40 years ago. Fate's Hand have the vibe but haven't come up with something that makes their music distinctive, not yet anyway. The performances are strong and hopefully the songwriting is following closely behind. If you are into newer bands mining the '80s like Traveler, Haunt and Ram, Fate's Hand is a band to watch.
