One thing I really like with Otargos is that they've been releasing albums as if the slump in French black metal didn't happen. A bunch of bands started sucking but these guys stuck to their guns, releasing quality black metal. They're not the most original band out there and, writing this, I think that's not a bad thing seeing how some bands "try too much", but their brand of black metal is always convincing. This is just as true with Xeno Kaos as it has been with the other albums I've heard from the band. Raw, violent, heavy and hateful, mixing both fast and slower, atmospheric and creepy-as-fuck music, these guys just do it right on this album. The vocals are nightmare-inducing, a mix of black metal rasp and death growl that's presented at the same level as the rest of the instruments and I found here to be a major asset to the overall vibe. Like everything else I've heard from this band, it's addictive and hard to kick off the playlist. |
