Incessant is an Irish black metal band that has been around a couple of years and Perennial Umbra is their debut EP. They play a melodic brand of second-wave black metal with haunted, rasping vocals and a solidly creepy atmosphere. It isn't overly harsh, certainly not what you could aptly call "raw," but it still has that unsettling vibe you want your black metal to have. The songwriting is generic and Incessant sound like any number of bands, having not yet hit upon anything that would set their music apart from the crowd. Perennial Umbra is like a toe in the water, a "yes, we can play black metal" statement. Where Incessant go from here is up to how much effort they put into refining their writing and developing a sound that is identifiable in the sea of black metal. |
