With the demise of the long-running Acheron, mainstay Vincent Crowley just went ahead and named his new band after himself. This is a guy who made his rep playing guitar on the earliest Nocturnus demos, and then parlayed that into a very long C-list career with the extremely bland Death Metal that Acheron always peddled. I find this a stronger album than anything that band ever produced, but it's still not exactly first-rate stuff. This is just kind of stodgy, midpaced Florida Death Metal with Crowley's signature barking vocals. He never sounds very excited about what he's doing, and that doesn't change here. I have to say the guitar playing is much better than was usual on Acheron discs, and some of the leads on here are really excellent. By itself, however, that can't lift this above the standard, and this is just kind of overly conventional and unexciting. |
