Against the World is the third album from Chile's Bolido and it is full of their hard rocking heavy metal and like the last album, Heavy Bombers, it has a few twists designed to push the envelope a bit. There are several tracks of traditional metal like "In Dreams" which has a Fastway-style hard rock riff and "Against the World" where the singer's high-pitched voice and the crunchy guitars reminded me of L.A.'s Malice. The first little detour Bolido take is down the funk-metal side street for "Time to Be Yourself," a song with a prominent bass line and some almost reggae-sounding guitars, though it is still a rock song (think Mordred or Ignorance). Against the World ends with "White Hell", a 21+ minute retelling of the Nazi invasion of Russia during World War II and the associated atrocities and privations that both sides endured. It is an ambitious song, helped along with some narration that comes across as slightly heavy-handed, but otherwise holds together despite the length. I once again give Bolido credit for trying some different things and not just cranking out a bunch of solid yet generic songs. In spots, Against the World is a little disjointed and doesn't flow as well as it could, that being the downside of going out on a limb. It is still a solid album that fans of traditional metal with an '80s vibe shouldn't hesitate to check out.
