Another step in the evolution of the sound of this extremely underground band. As always, this is mostly the work of multi-instrumentalist Rafal Bowman, who just keeps getting better and better as a guitar player, and his fretwork is really the highlight of the album. From an almost epic, classic metal sound on the first album, CoC has moved into being an increasingly technical Melodic Death Metal band, with current vocalist Joshua Ratcliff having a rather undistinguished but urgent rasping attack. Overall, the sound is strongly reminiscent of mid-period Dark Tranquility, but the guitar attack is much more precise and varied. Overall, with the bright, sharp playing and the incisive melodies, this is just a pleasure to listen to and this band's best work yet. |
