This demo was the first release by the legendary Finnish band Xysma, and it's arguably the most significant release of their careers and in the history of Finland's underground scene. Released back in 1989, there really wasn't anyone else in Finland that was more extreme than this trio, so it's no wonder that they dropped jaws all over Turku, Finland and reached the rest of the world via tape trading at record speed. At only 17 minutes and 18 tracks, one of which is a cover of Napalm Death's "Deceiver", Swarming of the Maggots is undeniably a Grindcore release, and it is a grinding, merciless onslaught of the stuff that hasn't diminished with age in the slightest. This has none of the experimentation that they're well known for these days, but who needs that when you have songs with putrid titles like "Pulsating Cerebral Smile", "Pulverized Necrobrains", "Unanaesthetic Genitoplasty", and "Priests Fomented in Excrements" that rage like only young Finns working to be as extreme and disgusting as possible can make? This may not have the iconoclastic nature of something like Yeah, but this demo is a crucial part of the evolution of Finnish Death Metal along with being a perfectly distilled blast of gurgling Grindcore madness, and that alone makes this a classic worthy of your time.
