This may come as a surprise to some of you reading this, but Sweden has one of the biggest Death Metal scenes out there, so much so that even decades after its golden age you see bands working hard to act like that age never ended and making perfectly acceptable music while doing so. Skullcrush are just one of many bands who work in this style, and while they do it pretty well, they aren't very notable for all that. They got the buzzsaw guitar sound, they have the grunted vocals, and they have all the ideas bands like Dismember had decades ago without doing anything new with them or doing it quite well enough to stand out in spite of how derivative they are. They get some points for some really solid lead work, particularly the ending lick of the album closer "Foretoken Punishment", but at the end of the day, the best description for this release is "another one". If that's all you're looking for, then this will serve as a fun half-hour you won't remember much about once it's over. |
