Infex is a band that plays classically inspired thrash metal with a modern production and vibe. I hear both Bay Area and German thrash influences throughout Burning in Exile, their third album. Most of the speed comes courtesy of the drumming which is crisp and precise and certainly sounds triggered but, either way, is the driving force. The guitars are crunchy but not as forceful as I'd like them to be. The vocals range from relatively clear on songs like "The Burning" and "Blood of the Wicked", giving them a Bay Area sound, to harsh on "Acid Reign" and "Beer Run." The latter songs had me thinking of Kreator and Tankard, respectively, while the clear vocals generate more of a Testament/Exodus feel. Overall, Burning in Exile has some creative drum rolls and is suitably aggressive, but the production is somewhat sterile and antiseptic and on top of that the riffs are not overly exciting. The members of Infex can play, but this album comes across too generic, almost paint-by-numbers in its execution. I'd like to hear them loosen up a little, but that's just me. Fans of more technical music may find more to like on Burning in Exile. |
