The Curse is the third album from L.A.'s Omen, the final one with original vocalist J.D. Kimball and the last great album the band released. Epic US metal with thundering riffs and awesomely metal lyrics is what this album is all about. Songs like "The Curse," "Bounty Hunter" and "Kill on Sight" are pure, unadulterated metal that will knock your socks off. Kimball's ballsy vocals, Kenny Powell's massive guitar and the solid bottom end of bassist Jody Henry and drummer Steve Wittig work together seamlessly to produce bombastic and catchy songs from start to finish. The production and songwriting are more polished and smoother than on Battle Cry and Warning of Danger, so it comes across perhaps a little less dangerous or "underground" than its predecessors, but you cannot argue with how much ass this band kicks on any of their early releases. Kimball would leave after this album and the L.A. scene would overtake Omen on the next release, Escape to Nowhere, with its scantily clad woman on the cover, more commercial songwriting, and major step down in vocals, courtesy of Coburn Pharr. Omen would never again deliver the goods like they did on their first three albums, making The Curse every bit as essential for the '80s metal fan as Battle Cry and Warning of Danger. For fans of Manilla Road, early Manowar, Warlord, etc. |
