After their demo Swarming of the Maggots took the Finnish underground by storm, Finnish luminaries Xysma recruited guitarist Olivier Lawny and went on to make Above the Mind of Morbidity, which sees them moving from strict Grindcore à la Napalm Death and Sore Throat and more towards the (relatively) moodier, more refined realms of Death/Grind, particularly Carcass' legendary Symphonies of Sickness. Frankly, it wouldn't be unfair to call Xysma a Carcass clone on this release, especially with song titles like "Foetal Mush", "Paradise of Steaming Cadavers", and "Mild Stench of Rot", but considering they had both the musical chops and the relentless youthful energy to pull it off, I'd say that's more of a compliment. Not much more to say about this album, it's just another classic of grindy, guttural Death Metal that only early Xysma could have churned out (aside from actual Carcass, of course), and it remains one of several reasons why seeing one of their many promised live shows is on my bucket list. A gory relic of Finnish excellence. |
