This is an interesting album in that Old Forest mix a few styles, both musically and vocally. There's a strong black metal backbone but there's also a strong doom vibe going on here, more so than on their other albums that flirted with the genre. This is not the raw, straightforward second-wave black metal that the band did on their debut. The album is very melodic and often kind of depressing, enough to classify some songs as DSBM, with very few "kick-ass metallic moments." Quite the departure from their original sound. There are some raspy vocals but also a lot of clean vocals that sound very melancholic and really give a feeling of despair. I personally prefer the band's raw black metal material and this here is just too "quiet" at times, but for those more into the melodic and depressing stylings of black metal, Black Forests of Eternal Doom is worth checking out. |
