Gravefields are an Irish duo who started out as Dirtyprotest nearly 20 years ago, though it took them until 2017 to get an album out before changing their name. I can't comment on that album, but Embrace the Void works in a pummeling, technical vein of Black/Death with an occult bent to the lyrics and atmosphere. That makes this sound awesome, and at first it kind of is, as the band definitely has the heaviness down while also wringing out some solid melodies that give their music more dimension than average. Unfortunately, the songwriting more or less follows the same formula without any real variation, making even the better parts of this album sound like they're constantly being recycled. Individual tracks sound killer, but they end up being indistinguishable from one another and become boring very quickly, leading to an album that starts off with potential and ends up wasting it by the time it's done. |
