Old Forest have experimented a lot with their black metal since their excellent debut, Into the Old Forest, in 1998 (still one of my favourite black metal albums). I haven't liked everything they've done since, though I can't say I've actually hated any of the albums. Dagian is kind of on the good side of the fence. It's nowhere near the raw '90s black metal approach of the debut, but it's good stuff overall. The music here is more on the atmospheric and ambient styles of black metal, not rocking much but still getting the job done. It's very melodic and melancholic, even with some vibes that are not without reminding me of Pink Floyd on "Tweoneleoht"—it doesn't sound like Pink Floyd per se, but the overall vibe of the songs made me think of The Division Bell. Closer "Neaht" is a 15-minute ambient track that reminds me a little bit of Burzum in terms of atmosphere. That's a huge chunk of the album, probably too much, but when you take the album as a whole, it kind of works. This is one of those black metal albums that sounds more relaxing and sometimes eerie and would probably be quite accessible sounding if not for the raspy vocals. I didn't really like Dagian when I bought it a few years ago, but it grew on me over time.
