Undo the Chains is the third album from Indiana's speed merchants Wraith. Like a lot of "speed" metal these days, Wraith's music is blackened thrash but this time they've managed to inject a lot of catchiness in terms of melody and vocal hooks that have not been present on previous efforts. The magic is that this was accomplished without losing any of their speed or power. Wraith still crush skulls with evil croaks and bruising riffs on tracks like "Time Wins" and "Gate Master", but they let some of their punk influences show through as well. The guitars on the opening of "Born to Die" sound like they were lifted from the Sex Pistols and strained through an old sock from the floor of Motörhead's touring van, resulting in and almost black 'n' roll vibe that would have made Lemmy, Fast Eddie and Philthy proud. A lot of bands are playing this style, but Wraith sound like they live it as well and that comes through in their music. Undo the Chains is a must for fans of Toxic Holocaust, Bewitcher and the like. |
