This is one of those albums that I found kind of lacklustre at first, but with a couple more listens it started to sink in. Enigmata doesn't revolutionize the black metal genre, but it's solid stuff throughout. The vocals are especially notable, a little up front in the mix and so evil-sounding that they're borderline scary at times. The music is very much in the vein of late '90s-early 2000s black metal, a mix of heavy, fast and mid-paced black metal that rarely ever leaves much room to catch your breath, all surrounded by a gloomy, dark, sometimes melancholic atmosphere. So, nothing new here per se, but Pact sure have the genre nailed down and the more you listen to Enigmata, the more it drags you in. Perfect candidate to leave on repeat all day long. |
