Necronautical is a black metal band from the U.K. and if that makes you think it might not be typical black metal, based on that country's history with the genre, you'd be right. On top of the black metal, Necronautical bring in an epic atmosphere, traditional metal riffs, progressive elements to the songwriting and even post-metal screams to go with the blackened rasps and operatic female singing. Their fourth album, Slain in the Spirit, is a tighter and more focused affair that all might lead you to believe. The traditional riffing on "Occult Ecstatic Indoctrination" works rather well, and the agonized screaming suits the atmosphere on "Slain in the Spirit." Necronautical seem up for trying out different things, and that's admirable, but those things need to be catchy and that's where Slain in the Spirit falls short. Bits and pieces sound like they are going somewhere and are about to resolve but never quite do and often left me hanging. I don't hate this album, but I don't love it either. It would be something I recommend if you are fan more esoteric metal such as Atheist, Cynic, Monsterworks, etc. I'm not saying Necronautical sound like those bands but maybe their brand of experimentation will be appealing. |
