Another album hiding in my huge backlog, Reon, by Greek duo Melan Selas, has a lot of what one usually expects from Greek black metal. Its backbone is a raw guitar tone and nightmarish screeches, but it's also very strong on atmosphere, sometimes melancholic and sometimes creepy, some bits I could see as part of the soundtrack of a suspenseful horror movie that takes place in a dark forest. There are some kind of angelic, in a demonic way, female vocals that at first I thought felt a little out of place, but with more attentive listens the whole thing comes together. Some of this stuff also sounds downright epic and grandiose ("Ethereal Annihilation"'s marching style kicks ass). Bottom line, this is an album that's just the right length and doesn't overstay its welcome, yet packs quite a bit of variety. |
