Future Usurper is the second album from Crypt Crawler, a death metal band from Perth on the west coast of Australia. What little Australian death metal I've come across has been of the chaotic and often blackened variety, but Crypt Crawler are in the traditional, thrashy mold of pioneers like Death or Possessed. The sharp riffing and guttural vocals work together to create a punchy, hard-driving sound and head banging is hard to avoid. There aren't a lot of grooves or breakdowns, which is refreshing. The songwriting is competent but not very distinctive, so Future Usurper beats you up while it is on but doesn't leave many hooks rolling around in your brain afterward. Crypt Crawler are good at what they do, so if straight-ahead, no-frills death metal is your thing, they've got you covered. |
