Hammerhead is another in a long line of bands that sprung up during the NWOBHM heydays, released a few "official" recordings (a couple of demos and a single) but never caught on with any of the labels and split until the new millennium when conditions were again favorable. Destroyer gathers that early material, which apparently didn't live up to the band members' expectations at the time. Despite the aggressive cover art, Hammerhead's music is more toward the hard rock/proto-metal end of the NWOBHM spectrum with a distinct doom vibe running through several tracks. The A side of their single, a song called "Time Will Tell" and others like "Devil's Soldier" are the heavier tracks with typical chugging riffs and simple choruses that are easily picked up and sung along with. Others, like "Lochinvar" and "Second Best" have slower paces and more ethereal atmospheres. I hear echoes of NWOBHM bands from Gaskin and Tokyo Blade to Witchfinder General and Pagan Altar in Hammerhead's music, though listening to Destroyer makes it clear that while they were a competent band, they weren't quite at the same level as their more successful peers. NWOBHM completists will surely want this for their collections, but casual fans have heard plenty of music like this before (much of it better) and it may not strike a chord. |
