Ravenous is a Canadian power metal band and Hubris is their second full-length album. Their style follows a couple of directions. For the most part, they play at top speed with the drums driving the songs during the verse/chorus before handing off to the guitars for the lead breaks where the solos keep the pace at a frenetic level. Occasionally, they slow down to a mid-paced tempo (with an obligatory ballad), but all the songs feature catchy melodies and hooky vocal lines in abundance. Hubris reminds me of early Dragonforce (the faster numbers) and Orden Ogan (the mid-paced material) though the songwriting is a notch or two below those bands currently. This is a solid second album from Ravenous, who display significant upside, and fans of the aforementioned bands will want to give it spin. Additional Information Reviewed is the Spiritual Beast version with two bonus tracks. The other version is available via Feast Beast Records. |
