Aldorfrea is a one-man Black Metal project out of England. According to the Bandcamp page, the brainchild behind this is bassist Cwellere who set out to create a mixture of old school Black Metal with Atmospheric Black Metal and lyrical themes based on folklore, medieval warfare and more. I have to start by saying I am always impressed with anyone that is creative in any field, but especially music and art. Even more so when it is a one-man project. Whether you like the output is, of course, subjective, but at the end of the day, the work involved in the creative process and getting it out to the public is worthy of praise. Like I said in the first paragraph, according to the Bandcamp page, this is a project blending old school Black Metal with Atmospheric Black Metal but, to be honest, I really don't hear the atmospheric bits, but honestly it isn't necessary. This is some really well-done old school Black Metal. There are some moments where it slows down a bit in tempo and I guess perhaps it is atmospheric at that point, but it really doesn't matter. The old-school vibe is definitely front and center, with some really well-done tremolo picking and evil Black Metal-style vocals. This EP is at its best when the drums slip into that thrash metal style and it just creates this really nice groove with the tremolo picking. Not to say the blast beats aren't enjoyable as well, but the drums are actually one of my favorite parts of the album. Overall, a very solid 5-song EP that isn't breaking any new ground but is a solid old school Black Metal release. If this is anything to gauge the future by, I would say the future looks pretty bright... or considering this is Black Metal, maybe the future looks bleak and evil? Recommended. |
