New band here with an old school name and sound. Wanton Attack hails from Sweden and plays a very '80s style of heavy metal despite being the creation of a couple of musicians whose other works seem to be of the extreme variety. Their self-titled debut is a short album at just over 28 minutes and is mostly a plethora of hard-charging riffs, pounding drums and occasionally wild vocals. Tracks like "Wanton Attack" and "Crystal Ball" have the underground energy and disdain for a mainstream sound that takes me back to hearing bands like Mercyful Fate or Agent Steel for the first time. Further immersing the listener in the '80s is "Arrogant Humanity" which closes out the album with John Carpenter-esque synthesizers and brooding guitars wrapped up in simmering atmosphere. I can picture Snake Plisskin every time it comes on. I'd like to hear Wanton Attack get either a little tighter or go the opposite and get a little wilder on the next release but, either way, I like where they've begun their journey. |
