The Holy War 1095 is the second full-length album from Finland's Mysterizer. They play an '80s-influenced style of heavy metal built on the Iron Maiden template of melodic riffing and high-pitched vocals but with an Yngwie Malmsteen flourish of neoclassical leadwork and keys. The songwriting is decent but nothing groundbreaking or earth shattering. "King of Kings" is probably the best anthem with the guitar work on "Heroes" and the keyboards on "Last Stand Hill" standing above the rest of the album's performances. The singer is the weak link as in places, most notably "Virus C", he's working at the edge of his range and barely holds it together. Maybe Mysterizer needs to write songs more in his wheelhouse. Regardless, The Holy War 1095 is a perfectly serviceable album, but nothing more. |
