Album number three for these Quebec-based death metallers, and they show no sign of sparing the poor unsuspecting bastards who get in their way. A lot of what I said about their first two albums still holds true here as the guys are consistent in their style, but they sure do not sound stale as all three albums have their own personality. Abysse Mortifère focuses a lot on speed and an omnipresent deep, hollow sound that gives the entire album a dark and crushing atmosphere that grabs your head and smashes it to the pavement repeatedly. In real life you don't really want that, but in death metal? Fuck yes. The vocals are as punishing as ever, the vocalist literally barking away and taking his place along the loud, pounding drumming. The guitar work is great as well, lots of sharp, crushing riffs and some wicked solos that'll slice through what's left of your eardrums. When they're not straight-out pounding you to the ground, you are treated to some sometimes evil, sometimes creepy (or both) passages that make you fear to see what's around the corner. I don't know how long Outre-Tombe can keep on releasing such quality material, but I sure as hell am enjoying it. A little gem of pure death metal goodness. |
