One-man Black Metal projects are literally as old as the genre itself, but they've certainly become a much bigger phenomenon over the years as music gets easier and easier to produce and release. Of course, that makes for a lot of shitty bedroom projects clogging up an already heavily populated scene, but every now and then you get one that's worth your time. Schavot is a project run by someone called Floris, and it proves to be one of the good ones. This is mostly due to Floris himself being a seasoned veteran who's been in projects like Asgrauw and Meslamtaea over the years, and he puts his wealth of experience to use and churns out some killer '90s Black Metal that borrows as much from Norway as it does Sweden in its sound. Take the cold atmosphere and melodic styling of early Emperor and mix them with the unrelenting aggression of early Marduk and you've got a good idea of what Galgenbrok has to offer, and it all stands out by simply being much better than most, in no small part due to Floris' excellent musicianship. "Rooftocht" stands out with its keen melodies, but every song on here is an exercise in ravenous, old-school evil that I can never get enough of, especially when it's handled by a true expert in the craft. Not to be missed.
