I haven't been keeping up with Split Heaven, as the last album of theirs I heard was Street Law about ten years ago. I wouldn't have necessarily picked them as a band that would last, but here we are with album number 5. This is a band that is going for a classic metal sound and isn't shy about letting you know that, so if you aren't into '80s metal, then this band is not going to flip your skirt up. But then, if you don't like '80s metal, what are you even doing reading this?
Split Heaven have tightened up and improved a lot in ten years, as this is not the sloppy, messy band they used to be. There is definitely a looseness to this music, but that's supposed to be there. The playing overall is really good, and the guitar work is first-rate, with a real guitar-hero flash to it. Vocalist Jason Conde-Houston sounds familiar, and that's because he also sings with San Diego metallers Skelator. He's not the greatest singer, but he has a lot of energy and charisma, and he gets the job done. Without old singer Eligio Valenzuela's high-pitched wails, Split Heaven sound less like Scanner and more like Ravage, but they really have their own sound, with a lot of hooks and a strong sense of overall composition. They may never be a great band, but they are a really good one.
