This one came out of nowhere. Master Spy are a Canadian band who are unsigned and put this debut out as an independent digital release, but this is too good for them to stay underground for very long. The Train consists of five long songs that take a lot of inspiration from later-period Iron Maiden, with an epic approach and a lot of parts in each song, for an almost progressive feel at times. The musicianship is really first-rate, and every song has a lot of twists and turns along the way to keep you interested. The jewel in the crown is singer Flavio Lino, who sounds so much like Bruce Dickinson you will be repeatedly checking the lineup to be sure it's not actually him. It's uncanny. If I played this for you blind and said it was a track off the latest Iron Maiden album, you would have no reason to disbelieve me except that the last few Maiden albums are generally not this good. Lino gets great vocal lines to work with, though it must be said the lyrics are... not great. So those could use some work, but aside from that minor flaw, this is genuine underground gold. You can get this right from their Bandcamp for 8 bucks, and you won't regret it. |
