Hideous Death's Remnants of Archaic Evil takes the "archaic" part of their name to heart as the band lays down four fast and furious tracks of early second wave-style blackened metal. The riffing is thrashy but played so fast you can hear how the tremolo picking style would grow out of the escalating desire to play faster and faster back in the '80s. The vocals are a mix of black and death harshness and full of spite while the drums are thin with little bottom end, again signaling what would become a black metal staple. I don't find anything overly memorable on Remnants of Archaic Evil other than how it evokes the early days of bands like Mayhem, Hellhammer and Tormenter, but even so it'll rip your head off. I hope they continue to mine this vein of early black/thrash/speed metal while they hone their songwriting skills as this type of chaotic, yet melodic music is a little underrepresented in the metal scene of today. |
