Devil Cross is a new band made up of some well-traveled musicians. I knew from the first song that Jo Steel (aka Jo Capitalicide) of Ice War and several other bands was handling the vocals (as well as bass) by his wild and often off-key singing and he is joined by guitarist Brennan Whitworth (Aphrodite, another Jo Steel band) and Haunt's Trevor William Church on drums. Stylistically, Devil Cross' music is a lot like the early NWOBHM, combining melodic guitars with marginal singing and the speed and attitude of punk. It is a raucous album that despite Steel's vocal shortcomings does tend to get the feet tapping and the air guitar in your hands. I was singing along to tracks like "Slayer of Dragons" and "Dig Your Own Grave" despite myself. Most of the album is decent, nothing to get too excited about. However the cover of Détente's "Shattered Illusion" works very well. Devil Cross dig into this one and do their best Venom impersonation with great success. I must hand it to Steel and Church; they are workhorses leaving us no shortage of new music. I'd like to hear Steel tighten up his singing which I think would elevate his bands' efforts immensely. If you dig Ice War, Haunt, Aphrodite, and the like, Devil Cross' debut This Mortal Coil is along those lines. |
