Info on Rökkr and this self-titled debut album is a bit scarce as they don’t have a Metal-Archives entry yet, but don’t let that stop you from trying to find a copy. Five songs of powerful, thrashy, ponderously crushing metal will be your prize. "Raven’s Wing" lulls you into a false sense of security with its melodic intro before the riffing starts to flatten everything in its path, driven by some hellish growling. It reminds me of early Bathory’s aggressive thrashing with some of later Bathory’s epic atmosphere. "Oath of Blood" is in a similar vein along with the slow, murderous pounding of "Into the Ice". The album wraps up with "Winter" a lengthy song with a death/doom vibe that manages to stay interesting for its entire length. This style of music isn’t typically my cup of tea, but Rökkr’s music infected my soul with its combination of black, death, doom and traditional metal and I found myself hitting repeat often. If you want your music to lay down an inexorably advancing layer of molten metal that is like a lava flow you cannot escape, look no further than Rökkr. |
