Wonders is a new band from Italy, formed in 2020, that have signed with Limb Music for their debut album, The Fragments of Wonder. While the band may be new, the musicians have been around the block once or twice, led by keyboardist Bob Katsionis, he of so many other bands. The other guys in the band have also brought a good deal of experience, so the songs on The Fragments of Wonder sound excellent. Progressive power metal is definitely a tricky proposition, but Wonders do a good job balancing catchy, energetic choruses and double-kick speed with complex, but not obtuse keyboard and guitar wizardry. "Good & Bad", which kicks off the album and was released as a single, is probably my favorite song, possessing a hooky chorus and just enough down tuning to evoke bands like Threshold and even Symphony X. The rest of the album is very good, though the other songs didn’t sink in as readily. I also want to thank Wonders for not including any 10+ minute, self-indulgent songs. This increased the listenability of The Fragments of Wonder greatly (for me, anyway). Wonders is off to a promising start with a mature and entertaining debut for fans of top-notch prog/power metal. |
