This has to be some kind of record for me. I reviewed this band’s third album, SelfRealization, waaaaay back in 2003 as one of my very earliest reviews, and here I have their fifth, self-titled album nineteen years later. I didn’t even know they still existed, and they almost didn’t, since they were broken up between 2012 and 2016 and only two members from those old days are still in the band.
The band is more technical than they used to be, though they were always pretty techy, but the subgenre has grown since the old days and they have grown with it. I like this better than I liked their old stuff, as it has more melody in it and the songs have a bit more identity. Vocalist Adam Sychrow is suitably guttural, but he sometimes gets mixed too loud and hits that point where it just sounds like he is belching into the mike. When he is mixed in with the rest of the band, the whole sounds much better. This is still Tech Death, so it is fast and precise and sometimes too clickety-click for its own good, but overall I found this a lot more listenable than the band was twenty years ago.
