Ereb Altor have had a lot of variety in their sound over the past 14 years, but Vargtimman finds them in the style of theirs that I like the best—melodic, blackened Viking Metal with mostly clean singing. It’s not like it’s a secret that Daniel Bryntse has a great voice and an equally good ear for melody, so when he is signing rather than using rasps, then the music is going to be better, and it suits the doomy, gloomy sound of this disc to perfection. I generally like this band better when they sound more like Bathory and less like Enslaved, and this is very much in the Bathory vein, except with better quality singing. The harsh vocals still cop up here and there, but they really don’t mix with the sound this time out. Overall, this is a strong album in the band’s discography. |
