Old-school Death Metal has been back in a big way for quite some time, whether it be old acts going strong or new ones stepping in to carry the maggot covered mantle. Finnish three-piece Morbific are of the latter category, and despite hailing from the same town as Nightwish, they work in that grimy vein of ‘90s Finnish Death Metal and do it well enough for me to think they might actually be the illegitimate bastards of classic acts like Funebre and Abhorrence. You get ultra-heavy doomines with the opening title track, grinding, Xysma-esque numbers like "Cadaveric Maggot Farm," and everything in between with this album, all of which has that distinctly gloomy atmosphere that you can only call Finnish. Anyone familiar with the style won’t find anything groundbreaking with Ominous Seep of Putridity, but it will make you nostalgic for the glory days of the Finnish Death Metal scene, and who could argue with that? |
