Debut from this Finnish band who are channeling pure Second-Wave Black Metal orthodoxy. It makes me feel old to realize that this is the style that was prominent when I first got into Black Metal, and that it’s now a retro style. Bands like Charnel Valley, Argath, Berserk, Hallstatt—all bands from the early aughts who were trying to sound as much like classic-era Mayhem as they could, all while adding a somewhat more prominent sense of melody worked into the raw slashing. This is not what we used to call "Basement Black Metal", because the production is better than that, but it still has a nicely raw, echoing sound to it. Definitely taking inspiration from stuff like The Deathcrush and A Blaze in the Northern Sky but not slavishly copying them, this is old school but manages to not sound like a retread. |
