I’m kind of torn on this album as it has a lot of good parts and some that I can... hmmm... tolerate. Allegaeon are still doing their technical melodic death metal thing with more emphasis on death metal this time around and, overall that works quite well, with the faster and heavier parts standing up to the best of them. There are quieter parts that sometimes sound out of place and kind of break the mood, though as far as the music goes it’s still pretty good stuff. The vocals are where things hurt a little. The growls are good enough but the clean vocals just don’t fit all that great—at least to my ears—and hurt the overall experience. Lots of good music going on here that would have been better served by sticking to death growls. Kudos to the band for giving it a shot, and I’m sure some people will appreciate their approach more than I did. |
