Review

Five years have passed since Atonement, so a new Immolation album is certainly welcome, and they make up for the wait a little bit with a grand total of 15 songs clocking at just over 52 minutes of death metal goodness. No surprises here, just solid death metal Immolation style. That loud, heavy, and kind of muddy sound that’s a staple of the band’s sound is intact and cranks the heaviness up to 11 and, as usual, the often slow delivery is downright crushing. I find that the guitars are crunchier and razor-sharp at times and that really makes you stop and take notice, though there’s no shortage of the band’s more classic style. I usually find a couple of songs that stick in my head on an Immolation album, but it’s not quite the case here. Not necessarily a bad thing, here the songs boast more atmosphere and are dark as hell, so that more than makes up for any kind of "catchiness" that I’d normally expect. Acts of God is a solid and powerful offering from the U.S. death metal stalwarts that shows they still got what it takes to deliver the goods, and then some.
